TSG Advisors – Education Managing Principal Dr. Carrie Henderson hosted a webinar focused on Florida’s implementation of Workforce Pell, including how programs qualify, what institutions need to do to participate, and what the new funding opportunity could mean for Florida students. Here are a few key takeaways from the webinar session.

State Approval Is Only the Beginning: Florida has identified 107 distinct programs on its statewide Workforce Pell inventory, but appearing on the list does not automatically make a program eligible for funding. Institutions must still demonstrate that their individual programs meet federal requirements and complete the state and federal approval process before Workforce Pell can be offered to students.

Florida Could See a Significant Impact: TSG Advisors’ analysis found that about a third of the offerings studied are already at or above available benchmarks for both completion and placement. Based on current enrollment, Workforce Pell could ultimately help thousands of Floridians access short-term training for in-demand careers. At the same time, many programs still lack sufficient data to determine how they will perform under the federal requirements.

Preparation Starts at the Institution Level: Colleges and technical institutions have important work ahead as Workforce Pell rolls out. They will need to closely examine their programs, determine whether they can document required outcomes, and work across departments to navigate certification and federal financial aid requirements. For students, the most important step is to confirm that their specific program has been approved before assuming Workforce Pell will be available.
